A monitor is not just “bigger is better.” Office staff need sharp text for spreadsheets. Designers need consistent colour. Security rooms need clear multi-camera layouts that stay readable for long shifts. The right panel saves eyestrain, reduces mistakes on invoices, and makes CCTV review usable instead of guesswork.

Panel type matters. IPS gives wide viewing angles and better colour for design and shared desks where two people look at the same screen. VA often shows deeper blacks—handy for dim control rooms. TN is cheaper but colours shift when you look from the side. For mixed office use, IPS Full HD at 60Hz or 75Hz is the practical default. Designers working in print or brand work should look for higher colour coverage (sRGB close to 99% or better) and avoid glossy panels that glare under the fluorescent lights common in Kenyan offices and malls.
Ports decide whether the monitor fits your PC, laptop, or NVR. HDMI is standard. DisplayPort still shows up on many desktops. USB-C with power delivery is useful if you dock a laptop with one cable. For CCTV, confirm the recorder or decoder output matches the monitor input—HDMI is common on modern systems. Brands such as Samsung publish clear port diagrams; check them before you buy so you do not need last-minute adapters on install day. If you already run dual PCs, a monitor with two inputs and a simple input switch saves desk clutter.
CCTV viewing has different priorities than word processing. You want a large, bright panel that holds many camera tiles without mushy detail. Matte screens reduce reflections from windows and security booth lighting. Some sites use one large monitor for live view and a second for playback or alarms. If you already run Hikvision or Dahua recorders, match resolution so the monitor is not the weak link—Full HD is fine for many small installs; higher resolution helps when you zoom during investigation. Place the desk so operators are not staring into a window behind the screen.
Ergonomics pay for themselves. Height, tilt, and VESA mount support let you set eye level correctly and free desk space for keyboards and radios. Dual-monitor setups need matching heights and similar colour temperature or the eye works harder all day. For design desks, calibrate once after install and keep room lighting consistent. For call-centre or accounts desks, prioritise flicker-free and low blue-light modes if staff complain of headaches after long shifts. A cheap fixed stand that forces a hunched neck will cost you more in sick days than a mid-range adjustable model.
