External Housing for 2.5-Inch SATA Drives

The Western Digital HDD Casing converts an internal 2.5-inch SATA drive into a bus-powered USB 3.0 external disk. Western Digital supplies the shell with a captive USB cable and no external power brick. The enclosure accepts both hard disk drives and solid state drives in the 7 mm and 9.5 mm height classes.

A USB 3.0 bridge controller carries the host link at 5 Gbps and negotiates the SATA III interface at 6 Gbps internally. UASP support trims command overhead on compatible hosts. The drive draws power from the USB bus, so the unit needs no 12 V adapter during field use.

The shell is moulded from black ABS plastic with a matte finish and measures 128 x 78 x 14 mm. A sliding cover releases without tools, and the drive seats against the SATA connector under light spring pressure. A blue LED reports link and activity. The unit enumerates as a standard mass storage device on Windows, macOS and Linux.
