Description
Z790 ATX Board for LGA1700 Builds
The MSI Z790 GAMING PLUS WIFI is an ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z790 chipset with an LGA1700 socket. It accepts 12th, 13th and 14th Gen Intel Core processors, plus Pentium Gold and Celeron parts. Four DDR5 DIMM slots take up to 256GB at 7200MHz with overclocking.
A single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot runs from the CPU at full x16 bandwidth for current graphics cards. Three additional slots provide PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x1 expansion. Four M.2 sockets accept PCIe 4.0 x4 drives, and two also run SATA mode. Six SATA 6Gbps ports handle 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch storage.
Intel 2.5Gbps Ethernet and a pre-installed Wi-Fi 6E module cover wired and wireless networking. Bluetooth 5.3 links peripherals. Rear I/O includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port at 20Gbps, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs. A Flash BIOS button restores firmware without a CPU or memory installed.
Key Features
14+1+1 Duet Rail Power System
Fourteen phases feed the CPU, one serves integrated graphics and one handles the system agent, backed by two 8-pin CPU power connectors.Storage and Expansion Layout
- PCIe 5.0 x16 slot from the CPU with Steel Armor reinforcement.
- Four M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 sockets; M.2_3 and M.2_4 also support SATA mode.
- Six SATA 6Gbps ports with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 support.
Extended Heatsink and M.2 Shield Frozr
VRM heatsinks with 7W/mK thermal pads and M.2 thermal guards keep power delivery and storage temperatures within operating limits.Rear I/O and Networking
- USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C at 20Gbps plus USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A at 10Gbps.
- Intel 2.5Gbps Ethernet controller for wired links.
- Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) module with Bluetooth 5.3.
- HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs for integrated graphics.
Audio and Fan Control
A Realtek ALC897 codec drives 7.1-channel output, and the board exposes six system fan headers plus a dedicated pump header.DIY Service Features
EZ Debug LEDs isolate boot faults, EZ M.2 Clip secures drives without screws, and a pre-installed I/O shield speeds case installation.

Why Choose the Z790 GAMING PLUS WIFI
The 14+1+1 power stage and dual 8-pin connectors support sustained loads from high-core-count LGA1700 processors.
PCIe 5.0 x16 readiness covers current graphics cards and leaves headroom for next-generation add-in boards.
Four M.2 sockets and six SATA ports allow dense storage arrays without add-in controller cards.
Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5Gbps Ethernet give redundant network paths for failover and high-throughput transfers.
Flash BIOS recovery and EZ Debug LEDs shorten troubleshooting time during fleet deployment.
The pre-installed I/O shield and EZ M.2 Clip reduce assembly steps for volume builds.

Decent board overall but the BIOS update process was a bit fiddly the first time, and I needed a second USB stick before the Flash BIOS button recognised the file. Once flashed, no issues since – stable daily driver for our editing workstation. The M.2 slot under the chipset heatsink needs the graphics card removed to reach, so plan the order of assembly.
Faith Wairimu (verified owner) –
ATX layout gave me plenty of room for cable routing and the fan headers are well placed for a triple-radiator loop. Booted first time with 14th-gen CPU and 32GB DDR5 at 7200 XMP.

Solid board. The 2.5G LAN made a real difference on our office NAS transfers compared to the old gigabit setup.
Irene Muthoni (verified owner) –
Four M.2 slots is what sold me – I run a separate drive for OS, projects, scratch and backup, all with Shield Frozr heatsinks. DDR5 stable at 6400 in EXPO without manual tuning. BIOS layout is clean and logical.

Delivered to Nakuru in three days, sealed. The PCIe 5.0 x16 slot is properly reinforced for a heavy graphics card and the latch releases cleanly. Wi-Fi 6E found my 6GHz AP without fuss.
Brian Kiptanui (verified owner) –
Paired this with a 14700K and the VRM heatsinks stay cool even during long export sessions. Flash BIOS button saved me because the board shipped before the 14th-gen microcode was widely available – updated without installing a CPU.

The rear I/O has enough USB ports for my peripherals plus a 20Gbps Type-C for an external SSD. Audio is clean through the 7.1 codec and I have no complaints on the headphone output. Only thing I would add is that the debug LEDs are tiny and hard to read in a closed case, but the EZ Debug system still works when you need it.
