Description
USB to Serial Adapter for Legacy RS232 Devices
The USB to RS232 converter cable adds a DB9 serial port to any laptop or desktop through USB 2.0. It uses the FTDI FT232RL controller, which handles USB-to-UART translation in silicon. The cable carries all nine RS232 signals, so flow control, modem status and ring detection work as they would on a native COM port.
The FT232RL integrates a 256-byte FIFO for both transmit and receive paths. Baud rates run from 300 bps to 921.6 Kbps, covering legacy PLCs, label printers, scales, EPOS terminals and network switches. The RS232 transceiver drives standard ±5V to ±12V levels over a DB9 male connector with thumbscrews.
USB full-speed signalling runs at 12 Mbps, which is ample for serial data streams. The cable draws bus power and needs no external supply. Drivers install automatically on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.9 and later, and Linux kernel 2.4.0 and above through the in-built FTDI VCP driver. The moulded strain relief protects the cable at the DB9 end during repeated connection changes.
Key Features
FTDI FT232RL Controller
The FT232RL handles USB-to-UART conversion and carries a 256-byte FIFO on both data paths.Full 9-Wire RS232 Pinout
- DCD, RXD, TXD, DTR, GND on pins 1 to 5
- DSR, RTS, CTS, RI on pins 6 to 9
- Hardware flow control through RTS and CTS
- Modem status lines for DSR, DTR, DCD and RI
Baud Rates to 921.6 Kbps
The controller supports programmable rates from 300 bps to 921.6 Kbps without jumper settings.USB Bus-Powered
The cable draws 5V at up to 500 mA from the host port and requires no DC adapter.Cross-Platform Drivers
FTDI VCP drivers cover Windows 7 through 11, macOS 10.9+, Linux 2.4.0+ and Android OTG hosts.DB9 Male with Thumbscrews
The DB9 connector uses thumbscrews to lock onto equipment ports during long test runs.Moulded Strain Relief
Reinforced joints at the USB and DB9 ends resist flex fatigue during frequent reconnection.

Quick start guide
Why Choose This Serial Adapter
The FT232RL controller has a long field history in industrial and point-of-sale environments.
The full 9-wire pinout supports hardware handshaking that 3-wire adapters cannot provide.
Baud rates to 921.6 Kbps cover high-speed PLC programming and firmware upload tasks.
Bus power and automatic driver installation remove setup steps on modern operating systems.
Thumbscrews on the DB9 end keep the cable mated inside vibrating cabinets and kiosks.
